This season, Mikayla Sager will make her highly anticipated role debut as the Countess from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro with Merola Opera Program, where she is a Young Artist for their 63rd season. Ms. Sager was also recently selected for several competitions, such as the upcoming Final round of the Gran Teatre del Liceu’s Tenor Viñas Competition, a finalist for the National Opera Association’s Carolyn Bailey and Dominick Argento Competition, a semi-finalist for the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition, and received Second Place in this year’s Vienna International Music Competition. She qualified in the prestigious Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and will participate in the competition virtually in 2021, and will compete live in the Loren L. Zachary Competition in Los Angeles, California. She concludes the season with the Merola Grand Finale concert. Due to the global pandemic, the semi-finals of the Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Award Competition have been postponed, in which Sager was scheduled to compete.
This past season, Ms. Sager covered the title role of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena with Baltimore Concert Opera, and was a Finalist for the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center, the Opera Index competition, the Dutch National Opera, and won first place in the American Protégé Competition. She has also been a semi-finalist for several renowned houses, including Theatre Basel, Opéra national de Paris, and the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker Programme. Additionally, she was heard in a masterclass with the Metropolitan Opera Guild as Donna Anna from Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
In the winter of 2018, Sager recorded multiple tracks with esteemed producer Simon Kiln, curated by Decca Records (London, UK). That summer, she was an Apprentice Artist with Teatro Nuovo (formerly known as the Caramoor Festival) during their inaugural season. For th engagement, she sang under the baton of Jonathan Brandani and Will Crutchfield, performed excerpts of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito as Vitellia, and she was part of Mayr’s Medea in Corinto.
In the 2017/18 season, Ms. Sager performed the roles of Violetta from Verdi’s La Traviata in concert with Opera Exposures, and Fiordiligi from Mozart’s Così fan tutte with Highlands Opera Theatre, where she was a Principal Artist. She was a finalist in the Mildred Miller International Voice Competition and a semi-finalist in the Premiere Opera Vocal Competition. Additionally, she sang “An Afternoon at the Opera” concert in her hometown of Vancouver, Canada.
Performance highlights include her debut as Micaëla (Carmen), Norina (Don Pasquale) of which Opera Canada said she “brought an edgy intensity to her role [and] augmented her vocal prowess with enviable acting skills,” Donna Anna/Zerlina (Cover, Don Giovanni) with Venture Opera; And while at Manhattan School of Music, performed The Fox (The Cunning Little Vixen), Pamina and Second Lady (Die Zauberflöte); (Orphée aux enfers), La Fée (Cendrillon). Further highlights include a performance at David Geffen Hall with the New York Philharmonic, Rossini’s Mosè in Egitto with New York City Opera, and numerous recitals with Opera Exposures. Additionally, she was a Young Artist with the Hawaii International Music Festival and a Resident Artist with Venture Opera. Ms. Sager is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and currently resides in New York City.
